About the Prizes

The goal of this program is to promote and recognize outstanding student writing as Dr. Miller did during his many years of teaching.

This competition was established in the spring of 2019 to honor our friend, teacher, colleague and mentor Dr. Jon Miller who taught English at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics from its opening in 1980 until his retirement in 2015. Dr. Miller passed away in 2017.

Entries will be read and prizes awarded by a panel composed of friends, former colleagues and former students of Dr. Miller with experience teaching writing or with professional writing experience or both. 

The Reading Panel for 2024 consisted of four former members of the English and Humanities faculties at NCSSM and three former students:
